Gas firm denies plan to bribe officials

A GAS company in Liaocheng city, Shandong Province, denied today it planned to pay or give gifts to officials this year in response to a document published online claiming the firm prepared 1.06 million yuan (US$155,882) to bribe key figures.

The table published online yesterday listed some of the Shandong officials Shandong Liaocheng XinAo Gas Co Ltd planned to bribe this year. The individual who posted the table online said a total of 1.06 million yuan had been prepared for 212 officials, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

Liaocheng XinAo said in its statement today that the document was only a rumor and it had already reported to police for an investigation.

The officials supposedly involved in the case included the Party secretary, mayor, and vice mayor of Liaocheng City, the report said.

According to the table, Liaocheng XinAo was to visit Party Secretary Song Yuanfang once every three months to have dinner or send gifts each time worth about 2,000 yuan. Gifts priced about 5,000 yuan would be sent to Song on occasions such as the Spring Festival and the Mid-autumn festival, according to the document. Song would also receive another 60,000 yuan in gifts or money for other reasons, the table showed.

Mayor Lin Fenghai was to receive 24,000 yuan worth of gifts or money during the year and some vice mayors will be paid 13,000 yuan, the report said.

The Shandong Standing Committee for Discipline Inspection may investigate the officials if it receives tips from the public, according to the report.

Liaocheng XinAo Gas Co Ltd is owned by XinAo Gas Holdings Limited, a clean energy distributor listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

A gift list of a Nanjing-based company was also exposed online last week.

It showed Nanjing Lucky Toy Products Co had sent 144,800 yuan worth of goods to officials in the city's Jiangning District during last year's Spring Festival, according to The Beijing News. The district has started to investigate the case.

The Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection told officials across the country to be wary of corruption during the Spring Festival holiday. Feasts, sightseeing and gift-giving using government money is forbidden, Xinhua news agency reported earlier.
