Guangxi villagers have excessive blood lead

THIRTY-ONE children in a small town in southwest China were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, Xinhua reported today.

Elevated blood lead levels have been detected in villagers in Chehe Township in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region recently. The local government organized experts from Guangxi Workers Hospital to conduct tests on the villagers.

The tests found 31 children had abnormally high levels of lead in their blood. But the amount was not high enough to cause lead poisoning. The children didn't show any symptoms of lead poisoning, the report said.

Doctors have introduced food therapy to help the children lower their lead level.

Local environmental and health authorities are looking for the cause of the villagers' unusually high blood lead levels. Experts have collected soil and air samples and started to monitor the wastes discharged by local factories.
