Hong Kong universities take top ranking places
THREE of the top five Asian universities are in the Chinese city of Hong Kong, while the other two are in Japan and Singapore, according to rankings published yesterday.
In the 2011 rankings, published by career and education network QS, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology overtook the University of Hong Kong to take the top spot, while the National University of Singapore remained at the third place.
The University of Tokyo was the fourth, followed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
China's Peking University was ranked 13th and Tsinghua University was placed 16th.
Ben Sowter, head of QS intelligence unit, said the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Hong Kong excelled as international universities. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is also becoming stronger in research and development.
HKUST President Tony Chan said, to ensure continued success, they will put in greater effort in recruiting excellent faculty staff and students and encourage entrepreneurship. HKUST will leverage on China's rapid economic growth and investment in science and technology, he said.
Published for the first time in 2009, the QS Asian University Rankings is produced annually and ranks Asia's top 200 universities based on a variety of factors including academic peer review, recruiter review and the student/faculty ratio.
