Hu praises Russian war vets for defending China

President Hu Jintao yesterday met Russian war veterans who supported China against the Japanese during World War II.

Hu arrived in Moscow to attend ceremonies marking the 65th anniversary of Victory Day in the war against Germany.

Hours after arriving, Hu met a group of Russian war veterans.

He expressed gratitude to them for their assistance in fighting the Japanese in northeastern China in August 1945.

The Soviet Union's war against Germany in the European theater of the conflict cost 27 million lives and immeasurable national wealth.

During his meeting with the veterans, Hu also called for a correct view of history.

He said the Soviet Union and China's contributions to victory in the war were "ironclad."

"It is an ironclad fact that China and the Soviet Union have made exceptional contributions to the success of the world's anti-fascist war," he said.

"The Chinese people highly valued the Soviet people's role in the war and would always firmly remember their assistance to us at a critical juncture."

Hu said the Chinese would never forget the contributions made by the Soviet Red Army to the success of China's Anti-Japanese War.

Contribution

"We cannot forget that, during the cruel war, many Red Army soldiers came to northeastern China, making an important contribution to the victory of China's war of resistance against Japanese aggression," Hu said.

Many Russian soldiers and citizens sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the Chinese people, he added.

By fighting together, the Chinese and Russian peoples forged a profound friendship, he said.

Hu also called for strengthened strategic coordination between China and Russia in a complex and volatile international environment.

He recommended the two countries should jointly propose a new security concept.

He said this should feature mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and cooperation, and joint appeals for the establishment of a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity.

"China and Russia bear the responsibility for promoting world multi-polarization and the democratization of international politics for the establishment of a more equitable and reasonable new international political order," China's leader said.

Hu is scheduled today to join other state leaders for a huge parade on Moscow's Red Square.

He will also participate in wreath-laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
