Hunan police seize 4,000 fake 100-yuan banknotes
A BOX containing counterfeit 100-yuan banknotes valued at more than 400,000 yuan (US$58,500) was seized by police in Hunan Province, a state newswire reported today.
Police found the box of fake bills during a routine check of a long-haul bus, according to a China News Service report.
A consigned box of milk drew the attention of a policeman about 4:30am on January 16.
"The brand of milk is very common here and the box was heavy with traces of re-packing, so officers thought it must be something else," a police officer told the news service. Police opened the box and found piles of new 100-yuan fake notes starting with the serial number "HB90." Previous reports said counterfeit notes starting with HB90 were in circulation on the Chinese mainland.
The bus driver said the owner of the box was not on the bus. Three policemen went undercover with one as the owner of the bus, another as the conductor and one as a passenger in order to catch the owner of the fake notes, China News Service reported.
A policeman called the consignee, who changed the delivery position twice within two minutes. About 4:50am a man in his twenties turned up and was arrested by police at the scene, the report said.
The case is still being investigated.
China's Ministry of Public Security launched a special campaign against fake banknotes after high-quality counterfeits were found ahead of the Spring Festival holiday, the report said.
The nationwide campaign "Action 09" will crack down on the production and use of fake notes, especially in 10 major provinces that include Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang.
During the 10-month campaign, individuals will be rewarded 300,000 yuan (US$44,000) for providing information about fake bill production dens, the report said.
People will also receive rewards for providing tips on people using, selling, transporting or purchasing counterfeit money.
More than 4,400 counterfeit note cases and destroyed 44 production dens nationwide since 2006, added the report.
