Insurance payouts for victims

The relatives of the six victims of the Arizona bus crash have received a total of 1.85 million yuan (US$27,086) from the China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co.

The life insurance arm of China Pacific sent two teams to pay the money to the victims' families.

The victims had bought travel accident insurance policies from the Shanghai-based insurer with a maximum cover of 250,000 yuan. Two of the dead, Zhu Yongshun and Sheng Zhenquan, had doubled their cover to 500,000 yuan.

Hong Kong victim Chung Yu-ching's cover was 100,000 yuan as she was under 18. Relatives of Zhu Guoying, Sun Mengqiu and Ge Xiazhen received 250,000 yuan.

Those injured in Friday's crash will also receive compensation from the insurer at a later date.

The Shanghai branch of the People's Insurance Company of China Group will pay travel agent liability insurance compensation up to a maximum of 500,000 yuan per person. The Shanghai Donghu International Travel Service, which arranged the trip to the United States, bought the liability insurance.

In late 2008, Shanghai increased the liability cover from the previous 150,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan for overseas travel and 400,000 yuan for domestic travel. China requires all travel agents to buy liability insurance to protect travelers.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai branch of Ping An Insurance (Group) Co will also pay compensation as six victims, including four of the dead, had bought insurance products from the company.

Payouts are expected to range from 40,000 yuan to 506,000 yuan.
