Jail for manager who took all the top prizes

A MARKETING manager from one of the country's biggest home appliance retailers has been sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzling nearly 800,000 yuan (US$117,000) in cash prizes by pretending to be prize-winning customers.

The Jiangbei District People's Court in Chongqing Municipality found Wang Houlan, marketing chief of the branch of Gome Electrical Appliances Holdings Ltd in Chongqing, was the only winner of 200 top prizes issued by the company during sales promotions between September 2007 and December 2008.

Gome awarded the winner of each top prize 4,999 yuan but the money, after tax, all went in Wang's pocket, the court said.

The indictment said Wang, who was in charge of sales promotions, knew which tickets given away with purchases were winners as he'd asked the printers to separate them from non-winning tickets.

Having gathered the winning tickets, he then collected copies of customers' invoices and friends and relatives' identification cards to apply for the prizes from the company's financial department.

Gome didn't find out about his deception until auditing in December 2008 when it was found that the names on the invoices were different from winners' personal data.

Wang was questioned by the company's disciplinary department and admitted the embezzlement.
