Jiaxing plans riverside swim sites

JIAXING City in Zhejiang Province plans to spend 7 million yuan (US$1.02 million) to develop three swimming areas by rivers fields before summer.

The money will be spent on cleaning the riverbed and raising its level to a depth of 1 to 1.3 meters.

In addition, handrails, climbing ladders, rest rooms and telephone stands will be installed at the sites, according to government plan.

There will be life buoys and vests but no professional lifeguards, according to the Oriental Morning Post today.

Local government is seeking residents' input, and it appears safety is a major concern.

"We welcome the open-country swimming fields, but if there is no management at site, who will take the safety responsibilities?" some citizens was quoted asking in the report.

Many people drown in Jiaxing City's almost 300 square kilometers of waters every year.
