Jobs lost after donated blood goes on flowers
THREE medical workers in southwest China's Sichuan Province have been penalized after donated blood ended up with a flower lover to nurture his orchids.
A worker and a director with the blood department of an unnamed hospital in Shuangliu County of Sichuan's capital of Chengdu were sacked and another worker has been put on probation, the Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday, citing Zhen Ying, media director with Chengdu's Public Health Bureau.
The bureau launched an inquiry after the flower lover posted photos online of him using the "high-protein fertilizer," sparking an angry public reaction, the newspaper said.
The investigation showed the city's blood center distributed the donated blood to Shuangliu blood bank, which then sent it to the hospital, where a worker detected clots and decided to dispose of it, Zhen said.
But the worker didn't follow regulations in disposing of it, and gave it to another worker to deal with.
The second worker gave it to a friend, and the blood eventually ended up with the flower lover.
Blood to be disposed of must be disinfected before being incinerated or buried to eliminate environmental pollution. The blood is not allowed to be resold or reused.
