Joint crackdown on triad gangs
POLICE officers in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have been deployed for the largest cooperative crackdown against triad gangs in the border territories.
Guangdong alone has sent more than 200,000 police officers to fight the campaign, named "Thunder 09," aimed at eliminating secret societies and terrorism groups.
The campaign is bigger than last year's crackdown ahead of the Beijing Olympics, according to China News Service. More than 1,000 suspects have already been netted by police so far.
Police in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have carried out regular anti-triad operations in the past decade.
This year's campaign might be lengthier as the 60th Chinese National Day celebrations exert pressure on public security, according to the report.
