Kazakhstan to sign US$10b deals
CHINA is expected to sign 30 cooperative agreements worth US$10 billion with Kazakhstan during Premier Li Keqiang’s two-day official visit to the country which began yesterday. They will cover trade, investment, finance and energy.
Earlier, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping highlighted a joint-venture logistics base and urged interconnectivity with highways, railways, ports, air routes, oil and gas pipelines.
In an article published in the Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper on Saturday, Li wrote: “The Sino-Kazakh cooperation is developing rapidly. The volume of trade between the two countries is increasing annually by 20 percent.”
Kazakhstan has become China’s second largest trade partner in the Commonwealth of Independent States, while China is its second largest trade partner and also its largest export market, Li said.
On his arrival in Astana, Li said China and Kazakhstan are good neighbors and bilateral ties have been constantly growing at high levels in recent years.
“I am looking forward to having in-depth exchange of views with Kazakh leaders on bilateral ties and issues of common concern, so as to further unleash the energy and potential of our comprehensive strategic partnership, upgrade China-Kazakh pragmatic cooperation, foster new bright spots in regional cooperation, boost common development and benefit the two peoples,” Li said after he was greeted by his Kazakh counterpart Karim Masimov.
Li is to attend the prime ministers’ meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization which opens today.
Li said cooperation under the SCO framework had yielded important fruits in all areas since its founding.
“I am looking forward to discuss with other participants on ways to further deepen pragmatic cooperation and strive to build the SCO into a reliable guardian for relevant parties to maintain security, develop economy and improve people’s well-being, so as to bolster regional peace, stability and development,” Li said.
The SCO, founded in 2001, currently has six member states — China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It also has Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as observers and Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka as dialogue partners.
After Kazakhstan, Li will travel to Serbia to attend the third leaders’ meeting of China and central and eastern European countries during an official visit.
In Thailand, the final leg of his tour, Li will attend the fifth summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation.
