Killer driver gets 2 years, 3 months

A driver in Hangzhou was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for killing a teenage girl near a pedestrian crossing on August 4.

The Gongshu District People's Court in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, convicted Wei Zhigang today after he had paid 638,000 yuan (US$93,800) compensation to the victim's family, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The court said Wei was driving at 74-83 kilometers per hour in a 60 km/h zone when his Porsche hit Ma Fangfang, 16, about 10 meters from the crosswalk.

Ma, who came from Linhai City in Zhejiang and worked in a local restaurant, died an hour later in hospital from her head injuries, the report said.

Wei had a blood-alcohol level of 0.36 milligrams per milliliter, which is lower than the legal definition of drunk driving at 0.8mg/ml.

The court said Ma didn't walk on the crosswalk so she had to take partial responsibility in the case.

Ma's families had forgiven Wei and pleaded for a lenient penalty.
