Lie detector helps solve dozen crimes: Hefei prosecutors

A LIE detector has helped prosecutors in Hefei, the capital of east China’s  Anhui Province, solve a dozen or more crimes, in most cases when suspects confessed after being examined with the machine, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The lie detector, or polygraph, measures and records physiological factors like pulse, respiration and blood pressure when suspects are questioned. While those examined may try to remain calm, changes in their body functions indicate when they are lying.

Hong Jun, director of the technology department of the city’s procuratorate, said the machine was mainly used to either exclude or identify suspects. Though the tests can’t be used as evidence — they are not considered 100 percent accurate for court purposes — prosecutors can use them to help guide their investigation. Sometimes guilty suspects will tell the truth due to the examination, Hong said..

The tests have produced 100 percent accuracy in the Feidong County Procuratorate, the newspaper reported.
Hong said investigators chat with suspects before the interrogation, which improves the results.

In July, they received a tip that a man surnamed Liu was suspected of bribery. Since he refused to say a word, investigators decided to “play a game” with him at first, Hong said.

Liu was asked to choose a number from one to ten and not tell anyone, and then investigators started to guess. When they gave the right number, the lie detector showed dramatic changes in his body functions though Liu said no.

Investigators insisted they were right and Liu later confessed his crime, Hong said.
