Life for China's corrupt 'sex-hungry' judge
A COURT today jailed one of China's top judges for life and confiscated all his assets on charges of bribery and graft.
Huang Songyou, 53-year old former deputy head of China's Supreme People's Court, was given the sentence in Langfang City Intermediate People's Court in north China's Hebei Province, reported Xinhua news agency today.
Long Zongzhi, the head of South-West University of Political Science and Law who represented Huang in the 10-hour trial on January 14, said they are yet to determine whether to appeal.
Huang was removed from his post on October 28 last year, becoming the first chief judge and the highest ranking law official to be removed for discipline violations in 60 years.
The court said Huang was given a severe punishment because he was a 30-year veteran of the legal system, today's Caijing magazine reported.
He took bribes of 3.9 million yuan (US$571,279) from 2005 to 2008 when he served as vice president of the Supreme People's Court. He offered preferential treatment to five lawyers from Guangdong in exchange for bribes.
Huang was also found guilty of embezzling 3.08 million yuan in 1997 with others when he was president of Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court in south China's Guangdong Province. He took 1.2 million yuan from the graft.
China's disciplinary authority said Huang led a lavish and decadent life. He was labeled a "sex-hungry judge" who had a special interest in underage girls.
The news of Huang°?s trial was kept private. No reporters were allowed near the court and Xinhua news agency reported the case in one sentence.
