Mahjong gambling costs official dearly

A VICE mayor in Sichuan Province was removed from his post on Tuesday for gambling heavily on mahjong, a Beijing-based Website reported today.
Chen Guangli, the former vice mayor of Yibin City in the southwest China province, was said to be under "double designation" for gambling, a message posted on online forums in late March said, according to the people.com.cn report.
"Double designation" is a special investigative procedure under which a Party official is ordered to explain allegations of disciplinary violations or corruption at a designated time and place.
The Sichuan Province Disciplinary Committee issued a notice in early April, asking government officials to learn from Chen's case, according to a Sichuan-based Shuining Daily report on April 8.
Chen, 46, was responsible for urban planning, construction, city management, land resources and transport in the city before he began gambling while playing mahjong in a Chengdu hotel.
Chen took more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,635) betting money with him, some it in unopened red envelopes, according to an online forum at 0830bbs.com. Red envelopes usually contain gift money in China.
Altogether more than 200,000 yuan was seized. The report did not say when Chen gambled.
