Mainland pandas make official debut with Taiwan public
THE panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their official debut at the Taipei Zoo this morning, the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
The two pandas, named "Tuan Tuan" and "Yuan Yuan" (when linked, their names mean "reunion" in Chinese), have completed a month-long quarantine period since their arrival on December 23 last year.
The 4-year-old pair, weighed 106.8 kg and 107.2 kg respectively.
"It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Taiwan leader Ma Ying -jeou last week when he visited the zoo.
Traditionally, it's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, or the new year holidays in China.
