Majoring In Dusting And Dish Washing

THE latest indication that the economic slowdown is taking a toll on Chinese society: University graduates are now competing for jobs as domestic helpers.

More than 2,000 college grads, including 28 masters' degree holders, applied for domestic helper jobs between August and December at Guangzhou Home EZ Service Co Ltd, an agency in the capital of Guangdong Province, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.

The agency targets upper-income clients and pays its maids an average 2,300 yuan (US$338) to 2,500 yuan per month. Top nannies can even earn 7,000 yuan a month.
