Man suspected of killing and sexually mutilating 4 people in Jiangsu

A MAN accused of killing and sexually mutilating four people in Jiangsu Province was expected to be formally charged by prosecutors in Huai'an City.

The suspect surnamed Xu was believed to have a mental illness, but court officials said he is fit to stand trial, Yangtse Evening News reported.

Xu left Shanghai for his hometown of Huai'an on November 4. He had 800 yuan (US$117) stolen in Shanghai, and planned to steal some money when he returned home. Xu got off in Huai'an's Chuzhou District about 9pm that day.

He allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to man surnamed Liu. Xu allegedly used a hammer to kill Liu. He then cut off Liu's genitals and stole 50 yuan and a mobile phone, the report said.

Two days later he allegedly killed a woman surnamed Wang, her grandson and granddaughter with a hammer. The bodies were found with their chests, buttocks and faces destroyed, the newspaper said.

Zheng Zhi, a psychology expert at Huai'an No. 3 People's Hospital, told the newspaper that Xu likely had problems with his own sexuality. Zheng said that an individual who mutiliates a corpse is trying to release self-contempt and repressed emotions.

Police caught Xu on November 8. After Xu was arrested, his wife said she couldn't believe it as he had always treated her well although she complained that he gambled too often, according to the report.
