Ministry allows street cops to wear masks

The Ministry of Public Security announced yesterday to relax the dressing code for traffic police, allowing them to wear gauze masks if air is polluted, the state-run CCTV reported.

The ministry made the announcement shortly after policemen in Ji'nan, capital of Shandong Province, became the first in the country to wear gauze masks in response to a call by many netizens who urged outdoor workers to take protective measures as air pollution reached hazardous levels.

In the worst-hit city of Beijing, some TV celebrities and real estate tycoons, made a joint appeal to local authorities to distribute gauze masks to traffic policemen to reduce inhalation of auto fumes and other pollutants.

Zhong Nanshan, an outspoken medical scientist who is widely respected for his role in China's fight against the SARS epidemic, said the number of lung cancer cases jumped 60 percent in the past 10 years, according to a CCTV news program.

Statistics show that about 40 percent of traffic police in China suffer from rhinitis and 23 percent suffer pharyngitis, 30 percent and 50 percent respectively more than ordinary people, Zhong said.
