More lung cancer deaths in most polluted province

THE death rate from lung cancer in Hebei, China’s most polluted province, is more than double the national average, according to the latest research.
Deaths from lung cancer have more than tripled over 40 years in the province, making lung cancer the top killer of all Hebei cancer patients, according to statistics released by the Hebei Tumor Research Institute.
The death rate from lung cancer in Hebei was just 9.31 per 100,000 people in the 1973-1975 period, but it rose to 35.22 per 100,000 in 2012 and 38.46 in 2014.
After excluding the factor of an aging population, the death rate had still increased by 180 percent over the past four decades, He Yutong, a professor with the institute, told thepaper.cn.
The institute’s report didn’t directly link the rising number of lung cancer cases to the worsening environment but He said that air pollution was the major cause, thepaper.cn reported.
Lung cancer rate is much higher in polluted areas, especially in north China with its reliance on heavy industry and the use of coal for heating during the winter months.
Beijing’s lung cancer incidence increased from 39.56 per 100,000 in 2002 to 63.09 per 100,000 in 2011. In neighboring Tianjin, it was 60 per 100,000, the website said.
Hebei topped the list for bad air quality from 2012 to 2015, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
