Murder reward doubled

POLICE in Chongqing Municipality have doubled the reward to 600,000 yuan (US$87,780) for tips about the shooting of a sentry outside a garrison. A sentry was shot and his rifle stolen on March 19.

Police thought the suspect might have had military training or once served in the army, Cqnews.net reported yesterday.

According to photos of the attacker issued by the police, the suspect, male, was about 170 centimeters tall and aged between 18 and 45. He wore a light-colored coat and dark pants with a light-colored stocking cap on his head.

Photos were from video cameras monitoring the scene. The suspect carried the stolen rifle away in a white plastic bag. Police said the suspect might be an ex-convict or may have committed crimes before.

The 18-year-old sentry was shot and killed by the gunmen outside a People's Liberation Army garrison in Chong°?qing's High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

The municipality's public security bureau categorized its investigation as an anti-terrorist mission and launched a citywide crackdown on illegal firearms and explosives.

In addition to the 300,000 yuan the bureau offered for tips leading to the perpetrator, police at the High-Tech Industrial Development Zone offered another 300,000 yuan.
