New SMS emergency number

THE Ministry of Public Security has chosen "12110" as the emergency short message number for police nationwide.
The 110 short message service has already been in use in 59 cities including Shanghai and Tianjin.
Now the ministry is making the new number a nationwide number but has not yet announced when Shanghai will change over.
The 12110 short message service will be especially useful for those with hearing or speaking disabilities, people in danger who cannot talk and for reporting message fraud.
In 2008 police received 114 million messages nationwide on the 110 service number resulting in 1.36 million criminal cases.
The 12110 service is free.
