New standard improves air in 161 cities
The hazardous particles responsible for much of China’s air pollution fell 17.4 percent during the first half of this year, according to Wu Xiaoqing, China’s vice environmental minister.
The drop of the density of PM2.5, the tiny particles that are especially harmful to health, in 161 cities was due to the adoption of a new environmental protection standard introduced in 2012, a standard set to be implemented nationwide by next year, Wu said.
The new standard adds PM2.5 and ozone to the list of pollutants authorities monitor to determine a region’s air quality.
Speaking at a Beijing forum on environment and development, Wu said China will further open its market, support research and development and upgrade environmental and technical standards to continuously beef up environmental protection.
Air, water and soil pollution will all be targeted in the ongoing anti-pollution campaign, said Wu.
Wu told the forum that China had cleared up 1,790 criminal cases involving environmental pollution between January and July this year.
