Oil prices may lead to taxi fare increase
BEIJING'S government is conducting a study on whether to adjust taxi fares now that oil prices have gone up and may also consider increasing fuel surcharges, said the municipal government's executive vice mayor at the ongoing National People's Congress.
Ji Lin, also an NPC deputy, said there are three -proposals for the fare adjustment at present, reported China National Radio.
The first proposal is that the government will offer subsidies. The second is to increase taxi fares and the third is that the rising cost should be shared by taxi companies, drivers and passengers.
Passengers in Beijing started on November 25, 2009 to be charged 1 yuan (15 US cents) in fuel surcharges if the taxi ran more than 3 kilometers.
Ji also said the Beijing government would publicize the number of government cars at the end of this month after the Beijing Finance Bureau completed the annual accounts.
