Panda at Henan zoo died from infection caused by parasite

AN infection caused by a parasite was the cause of panda Jin Yi’s death, authorities at Zhengzhou Zoo said last night, over a month after it passed away.

The panda had toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Severe toxoplasmosis, causing damage to the brain, eyes, or other organs, can develop from an acute infection or one that had occurred earlier in life and is now reactivated, according to the cdc.gov website.

Jin Yi, a 7-year-old female, died of cardio-respiratory failure from massive abdominal bleeding on February 9 in the zoo of Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province.

When reporters inquired about the panda being missing, the zoo tried to cover up the death, saying the panda was alive and returned to its owner, the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Wolong, in southwestern Sichuan Province, in order to get her pregnant.

Only after the panda center confirmed Jin Yi’s death on February 12 did Zhengzhou Zoo admit that it had not been truthful.
