Pandas start new year: eat, sleep and a snuggle
The panda pair from the mainland celebrated the new year "happily" with special food, a sound sleep, a quiet stroll and intimacy, according to the Taipei Zoo.
Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan's new year meal was local bamboo plus a few shoots from their hometown in Sichuan Province, as well as some steamed bread rolls, apples and carrots, a zoo official said.
He said Thursday was the last day for the pair to have Sichuan bamboo to eat. From yesterday on, all their bamboo would be Taiwanese.
The panda pair's weight was down slightly but still within the acceptable range, he said.
"At the beginning they refused Taiwan bamboo. Now they are getting used to it," Zoo spokesman Jason S.C. Chin said.
The pair embraced the new year with enough sleep thanks to soundproofing equipment that blocked downtown Taipei's new year carnivals.
At 1:20am Thursday, Yuan Yuan woke up, had some bamboo and went to Tuan Tuan. The pair slept together until 7:30am.
The pandas are living in a new house that the Taipei zoo built for them. They have been given two rooms measuring 254 and 210 square meters. The inside wall is painted with scenes of snow-capped mountains, dense forest and rivers, resembling the area in southwest China where they were born.
They also have a 765-square-meter garden and playground enclosed by 4-centimeter-thick, noise-proof glass.
"Our next task is to serve a large number of visitors when the pandas meet the public," Chin said. The zoo will improve security measures by stationing police at the panda house and adding more staff to maintain order.
