Peninsula must show restraint, says Wen

PREMIER Wen Jiabao called on all sides to exert "maximum restraint" over renewed tensions on the Korean Peninsula, adding that China opposes military provocation in any form.

Wen's comments mark China's highest-level response so far after North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire on Tuesday.

"China has all along devoted itself to maintaining the peninsula's peace and stability, and opposed military provocations in any forms," Wen said during his meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow on Wednesday.

"All concerned parties should exert maximum restraint, and the international community should make more efforts conducive to easing up the tensions," Wen said.

Wen also called for a resumption of six-nation talks on ending North Korea's atomic programs that stalled two years ago, saying it was "an essential way to secure stability and denuclearization on the peninsula."

The talks ended in a stalemate after North Korea refused to accept conditions verifying steps to dismantle its nuclear programs.

Medvedev said Russia backs an early reopening of the six-nation talks and is ready to coordinate positions with China within bilateral and multilateral frameworks to keep peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, China expressed concern yesterday about joint United States-South Korean military exercises in the Yellow Sea that start on Sunday.

"We have noted the reports and express our concern about this," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said, referring to the joint military exercises and the involvement of the nuclear powered aircraft carrier the USS George Washington in the drill.
