Plainclothes police in clash with traffic cops
TWO plainclothes officers in central China drove away an unlicensed car from the parking lot where it had been impounded, ignoring a traffic policeman who tried to stop them.
The two officers from Guannan police station in Wuhan's Donghu New Technology Development Zone, Hubei Province, had been stopped by traffic police at 4:30pm on Monday because they were driving a white Citroen without license plates, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
During routine checks, traffic police also found that the car didn't have valid insurance, an annual check certificate, a vehicle license or serial numbers on the engine and frame.
They seized the car after the two officers failed to show their badges and took it to the parking lot.
A surveillance video showed that one of the two broke off a metal chain holding the car at 5:34pm, while his colleague started the engine before the two quickly drove off.
The traffic officer at the scene and the parking lot boss, identified as Xiang, gave chase in their cars and stopped the Citroen in front of a hotel in Guanggu Avenue, which was under the jurisdiction of Guannan police station.
The two men in the Citroen then phoned colleagues at the Wuhan city police station and 10 uniformed officers arrived on the scene soon afterward.
They seized Xiang, whose car was also not displaying license plates. Xiang tried to explain the plates had been stolen and he could show them all the proper paperwork but he was taken to the police station for further questioning.
Xiang, who suffers from heart disease, started to feel uncomfortable during questioning and was taken to a local hospital, the newspaper said.
The unlicensed Citroen was then towed back to Xiang's parking lot, the report said.
The chief of the Guannan police station, surnamed Zhang, visited Xiang in hospital on Tuesday and admitted that the two people in the Citroen were his subordinates, according to the report.
But Zhang was unwilling to disclose any details of the Citroen, it added.
