Pop star Man tests positive for drugs

ANOTHER pop singer has been detained by police for drug use, the latest in a string of such cases in the entertainment industry on Chinese mainland.

Man Wenjun, his wife and more than 20 people attending a birthday party for Man's wife at the Coco Banana in Beijing on Monday night tested positive for drugs after urine tests following a police raid early Tuesday morning, The Beijing News reported.

Police said they found ecstasy in Man's VIP room.

Half the people at Man's party were taken away by police after they tested positive for drug abuse, the newspaper said yesterday.

The 40-year-old singer rose to fame in 1996 for his song "I Understand You All the Time."

A string of drug scandals have been reported since police were tipped off about rock singer Luo Qi in 1997.

Pop singer Jing Gangshan was found carrying drugs during airport checks in 2003.

Two members of the Zero rock band were detained in 2004 for using ecstasy at a pub in Qingdao City.

Pop singer Xie Dong was caught in 2007 using drugs with his girlfriend in his mother's apartment in Beijing.

Movie director Zhang Yuan, once considered a pioneering member of China's sixth generation of filmmakers, and his staff were discovered using drugs in a studio in Beijing in January last year.

Under Chinese law drug users can be fined up to 2,000 yuan (US$293.25) and be detained for up to 15 days before being forced to undergo rehabilitation.
