Power cut hits Changsha

AN accidental power cut on Sunday almost paralyzed half of Changsha City, capital of central China's Hunan Province.

It was the biggest accidental power cut in the past 10 years, said Deng Ming, a senior technician at Changsha's power bureau.

A construction worker cut an underground 220-volt cable with a hammer drill about 1pm near the swimming center on Laodong Road E. An underground transmitter station nearby was destroyed in the blast caused by the short circuit, Changsha-based retnet.cn reported.

Power supplies to the south side of the city shut down. Traffic at Yuhuating, Shaoshan Road and Xiangzhang Road jammed as the lights stopped working. Officers sent to relieve the jam got vehicles moving again 40 minutes later.

A restaurant near Shaoshan Road S. and Jingwanzi Road supplied power to lights at the intersection with its own generator, the report said.

A shopping mall and the Carrefour inside had to close. A team from the provincial power company and the city's power bureau restored 80 percent of the power supply to ensure power to Changsha Central Hospital and Wal-Mart in 20 minutes by setting up a temporary cable and borrowing power from a station 30 kilometers away.

Power to hundreds of local households didn't resume until 6pm, the report said.
