President says Party endures by learning from its mistakes
CHINESE President Hu Jintao yesterday praised the Communist Party on its 90th anniversary for its ability to adapt and said it must use that skill to fight corruption and ease social conflict.
Hu said the reforms of recent decades that had made China affluent and powerful had brought new challenges.
"We have every reason to be proud of what the Party and the people have achieved, but we have no reason to be complacent," Hu told more than 6,000 people gathered in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to mark the anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.
He said the Party endured because it learned from its mistakes. "In some historical periods, we once made mistakes and even suffered severe setbacks, the root cause of which was that the guiding thought then was separated from China's reality. Our Party managed to correct the mistakes by the strength of itself and the people, rise up amid the setbacks and continued to go forward victoriously," Hu said.
Hu likened efforts to root out corruption as "the Party's life and death" and noted that the Party's entrenched position had in part contributed to rampant graft.
"The Party is soberly aware of the gravity and danger of corruption that has emerged under the conditions of the Party being long in power," Hu said. "If not effectively curbed, corruption will cost the Party the trust and support of the people. The whole Party must remain vigilant against corruption."
The Party will intensify its efforts to combat corruption, which is crucial to gaining popular support and ensuring its very survival, said Hu, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
He urged leading officials to bear in mind that power is entrusted by the people and can only be used in their interests. "We must not turn our power into an instrument for making personal gains for a handful of individuals," he said.
The Party was now faced with many new developments, problems and challenges. It is confronted with the growing dangers of lack of drive, incompetence, divorce from the people, a lack of initiative, and corruption, Hu said.
It had thus become even more important and urgent for the Party to police itself and impose strict discipline.
Hu stressed that the country will continue to carry out reform and opening up, stay committed to pursuing scientific development, and enhance the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.
"To strike a balance among reform, development, and stability and achieve unity of the three is an important guideline for achieving overall success in China's socialist modernization," Hu said.
"Development is critically important, and upholding stability is also a critically important task. Without stability, nothing could be done, and even the achievements already made could be lost."
Despite remarkable achievements, China remains the largest developing country in the world. Development is still the key to solving the nation's problems, Hu said.
The Party must continue to follow the thinking that only development counts and carry out the central task of economic development. It should not waver in this pursuit.
Young people represented the future of China and its people, Hu said. They also represent the future and hope of the Party.
The whole Party must care about young people, listen to what they have to say, encourage their growth, and support their entrepreneurship.
Awards were handed out at the gathering to hundreds of Party members for their outstanding work, including rocket scientist Sun Jiadong, lead designer for China's lunar exploration program.
