Rare fish dies in Hong Kong
ANOTHER Chinese sturgeon died on Friday at the Hong Kong Ocean Park, raising the death toll of the rare aquatic species there to three in six months.
Tom Mehrmann, chief executive of the park, told a press conference on Saturday that the Chinese sturgeon No. 1 had developed symptoms like lowered immunity and anorexia a few weeks ago. He said the condition of the Chinese sturgeon No. 1 had suddenly deteriorated in over two days and it died on Friday morning.
"We are sorry about the death of another Chinese sturgeon," Mehrmann said, "and we are closely monitoring the other seven Chinese sturgeons."
He said five of the seven remaining Chinese sturgeons in the park were in good health but another two were suffering similar symptoms. The park will shut the sturgeon aquarium indefinitely.
The postmortem found the dead sturgeon No. 1 had bruising on its head and blood leaking inside, which might suggest problems with the park's salination systems.
The Chinese sturgeons, which are thought to have lived at the same time as dinosaurs and are found only in China, can live in both fresh water and salt water. They arrived in Hong Kong in fresh water last year and have been undergoing a gradual transition to salt water at the park.
Ocean Park received five Chinese sturgeons from the Chinese mainland in June last year as a gift for staging the Olympic Equestrian events in Hong Kong.
Wei Qiwei, a researcher from the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute, said more research was needed into keeping the species in different environments.
