Security ministry officials investigated for taking bribes
TWO high-ranking Ministry of Public Security officials are under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes while probing financial crimes, a leading Beijing finance magazine reported today.
Zhen Shaodong, assistant to the minister of public security and director general of the economic criminal investigation bureau, and Xiang Huaizhu, the bureau's deputy director, were placed under "double designation" by the Central Discipline Committee on January 12, according to the Caijing magazine report.
"Double designation" refers to a special investigation procedure of the Communist Party of China under which a member or Party official is ordered to explain or confess an alleged involvement in a discipline-violation or corruption at a designated time and place.
Zhen's detention is linked to investigations into Lian Chao, an investor in the five-star gaming ship "Neptune" operating in waters near Hong Kong and Macau, according to the report.
Chinese police detained Lian Chao at the end of last year for allegedly assisting Huang Guangyu, the former chairman of Gome Electrical Appliances Holdings Ltd, in money laundering activities.
Lian is alleged to have helped Du Juan, Huang's wife, flee China after Huang was investigated. Du is currently confined to her home in Beijing under police surveillance, the report said.
Authorities have yet to confirm a direct link between Zhen and Huang, it said.
Huang is China's second-richest man, according to Forbes magazine, and Gome's largest shareholder. He faces charges of manipulating the prices of shares in two companies, Shanghai-listed Sanlian Commercial Co and Shenzhen-listed Beijing Centergate Technologies Co, the China Securities Regulatory Commission said in November.
Huang's brother Huang Junqin, chairman of New Handsome Joint Group, is also under investigation by police.
