Senior police officer sentenced 11 years over fatal nightclub blaze

A SENIOR police officer in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen was jailed for 11 years by a local court on Tuesday over dereliction of duty that resulted in a fatal nightclub blaze that claimed 44 lives.

Chen Xuming, vice director with the Public Security Bureau of Longgang District of Shenzhen, was also convicted of taking bribes, according to the People's Court of Yantian District in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

Chen took bribes of 60,000 yuan (about 8,773 U.S. dollars) from the "King of the Dancers" nightclub and turned a blind eye to drug dealing and prostitution inside the club.

The court has confiscated the money.

The club began operation on Sept. 8, 2007, without a business license or the approval of local fire prevention authorities.

A fire broke out at the club on September 20 last year when more than 300 people were watching a performance and fireworks ignited flammable material in the ceiling, killing 44 and injuring64 others.

The court has not revealed Chen's plea and it was not known whether Chen would appeal or not.
