Senior uses bricks to bust errant drivers
AN old man started throwing bricks at cars at a zebra crossing in northwestern China last night to punish drivers running red lights, Lanzhou Morning Post reported today.
The grey-haired man in his seventies had been nearly knocked over several times on the crossing which was near his home on Nanbinhe Road in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province. He decided to raise awareness of the rules of the road in his own way, the report said.
Police had installed traffic lights at the zebra crossing about a year ago but a lot of drivers ignored them and made it perilous for pedestrians.
At about 7pm he found himself a good position and armed with bricks started dishing out his punishments. When a truck driver drove through the red lights the old man lobbed a brick through his side window. The driver was about to go and argue but saw crowds of onlookers
The old man's brick hit another car that had run the red light. The enraged driver got out and began to look for the culprit but jumped back into his car and raced off when he was confronted by the angry crowds.
Other old men joined the vigilante as locals applauded his actions – though some thought they were illegal.
Police arrived at about 10pm and stopped the attacks.
