Shoe tossing 'a matter of regret'
BRITISH Prime Minister Gordon Brown called the shoe-throwing incident during a Cambridge University speech by Premier Wen Jiabao "a matter of regret," China's Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
Brown sent a letter to Wen in which he spoke highly of relations between the two countries and the achievements of Wen's European tour, especially his visit to Britain, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in Beijing.
In the letter, Brown said Wen's speech on Monday at Cambridge received a wide welcome and left a deep impression on the audience.
Wen's talk was disrupted by a 27-year-old man who blew a whistle and hurled a sports shoe at the Chinese premier.
Alison Richard, the university's vice chancellor, also apologized for the incident in a letter to Wen.
Richard said she felt honored by the premier's visit under harsh weather conditions. She said Wen's speech was very beneficial in deepening the understanding of China's development.
In the letter, she also praised Wen's composure in the face of the disruption.
"Violent behavior goes against with the value of Cambridge University," she said.
Brown said the shoe thrower is being dealt with by police in accordance with British law.
