Sleep woes haunt urbanites
AN average Chinese sleeps for eight hours and 50 minutes every day, but nearly half of them feel sluggish after waking up, according to a report released yesterday.
The report on China's sleeping habits came from a survey conducted in November and December through random household visits in 20 cities, 20 towns and 20 villages.
Some 55 percent of respondents admitted that work pressures have affected their sleeping patterns and they have resorted to various means to improve their sleeping habits.
According to Qin Xiaoming, vice head of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, which sponsored the report, the survey revealed a trend in which people in south and west China tend to sleep better than those in the north and east.
Bachelors sleep better than the married, while men sleep better than women. People in rural areas have better sleeping quality than their urban counterparts, the survey found.
Noting new media's negative influence on sleep, the survey found that 67.1 percent of the respondents chat on their mobile phones or computers before falling asleep, while 43.2 percent of those going to bed after midnight do so because of online gaming.
Stressing moderate sleep durations, the report urged people to avoid overusing networking devices, while turning to relaxing music, massage and naps to improve sleep quality.
Residents of Beijing and Dongguan in Guangdong Province suffer from sleep deprivation the most. Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, is the place to be to enjoy the best sleep.
