Stabbing waitress said to have mental problems

A WAITRESS in a hotel leisure center who stabbed a township official to death in central China has been diagnosed with mental problems.

A psychological assessment has found that 21-year-old Deng Yujiao was mentally unsound at the time of the incident but should be partially liable for her behavior, Chengdu Business News reported yesterday.

Deng Yujiao was referred to Badong County People's Court in Hubei Province on June 5. The indictment said she stabbed Deng Guida four times with a fruit knife when she tried to defend herself. Deng Guida's colleague Huang Dezhi was also injured.

Prosecutors said Deng Yujiao had used excessive force but Deng Guida was considered to have been in the wrong initially, which could lead to a more lenient sentence or even allow her to escape punishment under Chinese criminal law.

The Badong court is expected to hear the case today, according to the newspaper.

Deng Yujiao fatally stabbed Deng Guida and injured Huang Dezhi, two township officials of Badong County, after she refused to join them in a bath on May 10 at Xiongfeng Hotel's leisure center.

The two men pushed and shoved and verbally insulted her, according to a police statement. She stabbed them but after the incident called police and gave herself up.

Deng Yujiao was released on bail on May 26 and is living with her family under police supervision.
