Stolen youngsters freed to go home
ALL 19 known kidnap victims held in Myanmar were back home yesterday, said police.
The latest to return was Qiao Yabiao, 24, who crossed the Chinese border yesterday morning, according to the Yanhu branch of the public security bureau of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province.
Zhou Xin, head of the Yanhu branch of the Ministry of Public Security did not say whether a ransom had been paid for Qiao.
All 19 were told by kidnappers in Myanmar to gamble so they would run up debts that could be used to extort money from their worried parents, but only Qiao complied, police said.
Qiao lost 100,000 yuan (US$14,700) gambling. He was held by kidnappers who demanded 55,000 yuan from his family.
Numerous abductions have been reported in six county-level regions of Yuncheng since August, particularly between August and October.
Most of the victims were freed after their families paid ransoms of between 20,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan.
The police paid one ransom of 1,000 yuan for the return of 16-year-old Wang Jian, whose parents could not afford to pay.
Three suspects were arrested for their part in the kidnapping.
