Students and seniors get holiday gift

STUDENTS, the retired and low-income families in Hangzhou City will be given coupons in time for the Spring Festival holiday, which begins January 25, a state news agency reported yesterday.

The city plans to distribute coupons worth a total of 100 million yuan (US$14.6 million). The coupons are intended to help needy residents enjoy the Spring Festival holiday and boost consumer spending.

It is the first time students and seniors have benefited from such government handouts, according to Xinhua news agency.

"The government wishes to use taxpayers' money wisely," said Wang Guoping, Party secretary of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province.

There are about 260,000 students in primary, secondary and high schools in the city. Each will get a 100-yuan coupon. About 310,000 retired people will each receive a 200-yuan coupon and 15,500 low-income families will also get a 200-yuan coupon.

Similar handouts have been reported in other cities. Low-income families in Shanghai will receive a 150-yuan subsidy before the Spring Festival.
