Survey: 70% Hangzhou residents vulnerable to cancer

A cancer prevention survey found that more than 70 percent of Hangzhou residents fall in the high-risk group for cancer, health officials in Zhejiang Province said yesterday.

The survey polled 25,000 urban residents aged 40 to 69. Of the 14,994 respondents, 10,529 were found vulnerable to cancer, or 70.22 percent.

After screening tests on 2,198 suspects, six were confirmed to have cancers in lung (1 case), rectum (1 case), breast (2 cases) and stomach (2 cases). Thirteen more suspects are waiting for further examinations.

About 25 percent of the respondents are prone to esophagus cancer, 14 percent prone to colorectal cancer, 12.5 percent at the risk of lung cancer and liver cancer respectively, and 11 percent vulnerable to breast cancer, according to the survey conducted in March and April.

The number of cancer patients increased sharply in Hangzhou from 293.63 per 100,000 people in 2003 to 335.01 in 2009, higher than the national average of 285.91.

"I couldn't believe my ears when they said I am vulnerable to four types of cancer though I'm just in my 40s. Now I realize the risk comes from my bad habits, such as smoking, a predilection for salty, barbecued and preserved food, and frequent constipation. I have to change!" said a man surnamed Zhang.

"The alarming result is a good thing. People will pay more attention to their health, lifestyle and genetic background," said Du Lingbin, deputy director of Zhejiang Tumor Prevention Office.

Quitting cigarettes, drinking less alcohol, exercising at least 30 minutes a day, having a healthy diet with more vegetables and less meat, and having a good temper are effective ways to prevent cancer, Du said.
