Survivor also survived 2008 quake
ONE of the survivors from the Eastern Star was also a survivor of the earthquake which devastated southwest China’s Sichuan Province in 2008.
But while Yu Zhengwei said he “escaped death again” — the earthquake claimed almost 70,000 lives — he was mourning his wife who was also on the ill-fated cruise ship but is among the missing.
The couple ran a small shop on board the vessel and he was on deck when the storm struck. When the ship began to keel over he fell into the water, according to a report in Hubei Daily.
Yu said he managed to grab hold of a buoy and had drifted in the water for about seven hours before he reached the bank.
There, local resident Wang Shengcai found him and took him home, the newspaper said.
Wang said he was checking whether his boat was safe after the storm broke but heard cries for help and found Yu lying on the riverbank.
