Suspensions over two fatal crashes
TWO Chinese officials have been suspended from duty after being involved in separate fatal traffic accidents, local authorities said on Tuesday.
He Yanhui in southwestern China's Yunnan Province has been suspended from duty after his SUV collided with a motorcycle killing a family of three onboard, including a pregnant woman and a nine-year-old girl.
He Yanhui, vice mayor of Yunnan's Lincang City and director of Lincang's public security bureau, was driving from Lincang toward Xiangyun on January 23 when his vehicle hit a motorcycle on the opposite lane at 1:38pm, according to the press office of Lincang government.
He Lunjun, 32, the motorcycle rider, and his daughter He Yulin were killed at the scene. His wife, Zhang Tianxiang, 30, died in hospital.
Zhang was reported to be seven months pregnant, according to Yunnan.cn.
"According to the investigation, He Yanhui was held fully responsible for the accident," said the spokesman, without revealing further details except to say tests showed no alcohol in his blood after the collision.
He Yanhui called the emergency services immediately after the accident and assisted rescuers escort the injured woman to hospital, the press office said. He also notified the provincial public security department and major leaders of Lincang, it added. He was suspended from his duties on Sunday and was now on bail pending trial.
He Yanhui was reported to be unreachable by victims' family members after the accident, according to the Website, which said his identity hadn't been published until the press release on Tuesday.
Traffic police at the scene even covered his car plates with white paper, according to a witness identified as Yu.
He Lunjun's elder brother, He Lunwen, said at He Lunjun's funeral on Monday that police had refused his request to meet He Yanhui.
He Lunjun's body was cremated on Monday while the body of his wife and daughter were cremated on January 25.
In a separate incident in Dangyang City in central China's Hubei Province, Fang Jiaping, vice chairman of the municipal political consultative conference, the local advisory body, has also been suspended from duty.
Fang's car and a motorcycle collided on Sunday, killing one person and injuring another, a spokesman with the Dangyang municipal government said on Tuesday.
The cause of the accident, as well as who was at fault, was still under investigation, the spokesman said.
Last year, Fan Xiaolan, the then-mayor of Dangyang City, resigned after hitting and killing an 11-year-old student with her car.
