Teacher tears flesh from face of student

A TEACHER in central China tore a large chunk of flesh off the face of a 10-year-old student who didn't finish his homework on time, a local newspaper reported yesterday.

Primary school student Zheng Chaoqun was still being treated in a hospital yesterday in Henan Province's Zhenping County following the December 18 incident, Dayang News reported. The teacher was identified as Guo Yabin, a 37-year-old mother of two.

"She was very angry at that time," Zheng told the newspaper. "She ripped and twisted my cheeks with both her hands, and then she lifted me up off the ground."

Zheng said he felt a piercing pain and fell to the ground.

"My facial skin was still in her hands, and the right side of my face kept bleeding. She looked anxious, put my skin back and sent me home."

Zheng's father took the boy to a hospital immediately. Doctors used 52 stitches to seal the wounds, which included a 5-by-6-centimeter injured area and a 12-centimeter gash.

Horrified class

The father reported the case to police and requested 800,000 yuan (US$117,000) in compensation from Guo.

One of Zheng's classmates told the newspaper that Guo often grabbed students by the face.

"When Zheng Caoqun's face was torn, we were horrified and our monitor cried," the student was quoted as saying.

The parent of another student said Guo had taken similar actions against every student in the class except the monitor, according to the report.

After the incident, Guo's relatives produced a hospital certificate stating the woman suffers from a mental disorder.

The schoolmaster, who is surnamed Cao, denied Guo has a mental disorder and said the school was astonished by her behavior.

Police are still investigating the case. No immediate action was taken against Guo by either the school or authorities.

Meanwhile, video segments showing two female teachers slapping and whipping students in a Guangdong Province classroom have been posted on major Web portals.

The two teachers worked at a private school in Zhuhai. The school's headmaster said they may be fired.
