Tech CEO denies resume accusation
THE former president of Microsoft China said he will sue a science writer for accusing him of faking his diploma and a doctorate degree in America.
Tang Jun lashed out at Fang Zhouzi, a "science cop" famous for fighting forgery and pseudo-science, who said he had evidence that Tang faked his doctorate degree and two patents in his earlier career.
Tang, current CEO of New Huadu Industrial Group, said he will not resign because of the "false accusation."
Tang became New Huadu Industrial Group's CEO in 2008 with pay of one billion yuan (US$148 million) in cash and stock. The employment contract, which created one of China's hottest job-hopping stories, reportedly has no date of termination.
The drama started on July 1 when Fang said he checked the names of graduates from California Institute of Technology's computer science department, which was widely considered Tang's mother school, and did not find Tang's name.
Fang also said he couldn't find Tang's name in the patent records of a photo sticker booth and a karaoke machine that can judge people's performances.
Tang repeatedly bragged about the two patents in interviews and speeches in China, saying he sold the patents to earn his first pot of gold.
Tang tried to appease the doubts by showing his diplomas from Pacific Western University. But his candor only got him into more trouble as netizens started to accuse him of lying for years about his education.
Tang defended himself by saying he never told anybody or said in any occasion that he has a PhD from CIT. "I only made some researches in CIT," he said.
Internet users, however, pinpointed the sentence in his memoir that reads: "I got a doctoral degree in CIT." On the social network site LinkedIn, Tang's personal profile said he obtained a computer science PhD in CIT.
According to t.sina.com, the scandal is currently the fifth most popular topic among Chinese microbloggers, with nearly 46,000 postings.
Disputes over Tang's diploma may even affect his former employer, Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited, Xinhua news agency said.
The company's prospectus in 2004 said: "Tang holds a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from University of Pacific Western, a doctorate degree in electronics from Nagoya University in Japan."
If the statement in the prospectus is proven to be false, the company may be punished by the United States authorities or be exposed to lawsuits by shareholders, Caixin Media said.
