Teen would give her life to save her dad

A TEENAGE girl in east China was struggling for her life last night after taking more than 200 sleeping pills in an attempt to kill herself and donate her liver to her seriously ill father.

The 13-year-old, a resident of Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, may need several operations if she survives the immediate effects of the suicide try, the Modern Express reported yesterday. The teen suffered burns from an electric blanket after she took the pills and passed out.

The girl's mother told the newspaper that she found her daughter lying on a bed "like she was dead" around 12:30pm on January 24 after she came home from a hospital visit with her husband.

The husband has been hospitalized for more than a month for treatment of liver cancer, the Nanjing-based newspaper said.

The mother, identified only by the surname Cui, said she had to climb into their home from the backyard as the front door was locked from the inside.

The 43-year-old woman found two empty bottles of sleeping pills and a letter beside her daughter. "Mom, I'm sorry I couldn't stay with you any longer," it read. "Please give my liver to dad and save him after my death."

Cui suspected her daughter may have taken the pills soon after her return from the hospital around 5pm the previous day, according to the report.

The girl was in a deep coma and was breathing weakly when she was rushed to the hospital, the report said. She awoke after three days of blood dialysis but has been drifting in and out of consciousness in an intensive care unit.

The girl had been kept in dark about her father's cancer until she found a diagnosis report in her mother's purse, the newspaper said.

The father, who had been confined to his home with hepatitis since soon after the daughter was born, was reported to have only three months to live, according to the newspaper story. Cui, also in poor health, has been on early retirement for more than eight years.

The family, earning only about 1,000 yuan a month (US$146), has been struggling financially.

Cui said she and her husband have spent nearly 100,000 yuan to treat his cancer.

The girl, who is being cared for at the same hospital as her father, wrote a note to her mother that she is eager to see him soon, the report said.

Cui said she is trying to keep her husband from learning about their daughter's suicide attempt.
