Thugs attack residents
HUNDREDS of thugs carrying wooden clubs and knives smashed a residential area in southwestern China's Guiyang City early yesterday morning, demolishing local residents' houses. The gang fled when police arrived.
A dozen families lived on the relocation site at Guiyang's Qingshan Road. They had reportedly refused to move, according to Guizhou Metropolis Daily.
Wang Xuenan told the newspaper seven or eight strange men with wooden clubs broke her door down and stormed in about 1am when she was lying in bed.
Wang tried to call police but was stopped by the men and pulled out of her house. Wang's mother was also dragged away with Wang. Part of their house was then flattened by a mechanical digger.
A chemical plant on the site was also demolished, while its janitor was taken away by four or five thugs.
Cash and a video camera were stolen from Wang's house. Home appliances, including a television set and refrigerator, were destroyed.
Wang said at least 200 men were at the scene but police later arrived and fired guns into the air to stop them.
The men scattered, leaving clubs and knives at the scene, resident Yang Zhenghui said.
Some families told the newspaper a relocation company hired thugs to force them out. The relocation company said they were just the representatives of the developer, and the last 10 families on the site had refused to move even when offered 10,000 yuan (US$1,450) compensation for each square meter.
Wang denied this, saying the highest price the company had offered was 3,200 yuan.
