Top PLA post for ex-president's son
LIU Yuan, son of the late Chinese President Liu Shaoqi, has been named political commissar of the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army.
The move was confirmed by the PLA Daily which featured Liu, 60, attending a meeting under his new title on Tuesday.
Liu took over the position from Sun Dafa, 66, to direct the army's logistics supplies including production, transport, housing, pay and medical services.
Previously, Liu was a political commissar of the PLA's Academy of Military Sciences, the military think-tank.
Liu, who was born in 1951, was raised in Beijing and studied history at Beijing Normal University. After graduation, he began a political career and was vice governor of Henan Province at the age of 37, the youngest at that time.
Liu joined the army in 1992 and enjoyed a reputation as being "firm in belief, down to earth and open-minded."
In 2003, he became the vice political commissar in the PLA's General Logistics Department, and was ranked lieutenant general.
He was appointed political commissar of the Academy of Military Sciences in 2005 and promoted to general in 2009.
Liu's father suffered persecution during the "cultural revolution" (1966-1976).
At 23, Liu Shaoqi was one of the earliest members of the Communist Party of China.
When the country was founded in 1949, he was elected vice president of the central government and became the president in 1959.
During his tenure from 1959 to 1968, he embarked on economic development that bolstered the national populace.
However, he was denounced as a traitor and a capitalism advocate during the "cultural revolution."
He died in prison in 1969, but in 1980 his reputation was restored with a state funeral.
