Twin bosses jailed over gang violence
TWIN brothers have been jailed for 17 years and fined 100,000 yuan (US$14,645) each for leading a mafia-style gang, running gambling dens, causing intentional injuries and illegal imprisonment in Chongqing city.
Chongqing No.2 Intermediate People's court today convicted Zhang Bo and Zhang Tao, both 23, according to CQnews.net.
Twenty-two defendants stood trial with the Zhang brothers. Twelve were jailed for between one year and 13 years and six months for involvement in the gang. Another nine were jailed for up to nine years, with one given probation. The youngest defendant was 20 years old.
The verdict said the brothers organized a 14-member gang in early 2007 that opened gambling dens.
The brothers' gang was known as the "Street Lords" in the southwestern city's Wanzhou before they were busted in police raids in July. The gang was well known for wielding long knives to solve disputes, the court heard.
They pulled in thousands of yuan every year from loan sharking and levying management fees from gambling dens. They also hired stand-over men to collect debts for local businessmen, the report said.
