Two men sentenced to death over tainted milk scandal
TWO men connected with the tainted milk scandal were sentenced to death today while Tian Wenhua, former board chairwoman of the Sanlu Group at the heart of the scandal, was sentenced to life in prison.
Zhang Yujun, who produced and sold melamine-laced "protein powder," was convicted of endangering public security and sentenced to death by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court. Geng Jinping was sentenced to death for producing and selling toxic food.
The court was set to sentence 21 defendants today, including Tian and three other former senior executives of Shijiazhuang-based Sanlu who were implicated in the scandal.
Three other former executives of Sanlu were given between five years and 15 years by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court.
As of 3:00 pm, the court handed down one suspended death sentence to one man, sentenced two men to life in prison and three others, including one woman, between five and 15 years in jail.
The Ministry of Health said it was likely the tainted milk scandal was responsible for the deaths of at least six babies. Another 296,000 infants suffered kidney stones and other urinary problems.
Apart from the 21 defendants to be sentenced this afternoon, Chinese police have so far arrested 39 suspects in the case, said Zhang Deli, chief prosecutor of the Hebei Provincial People's Procuratorate.
It was unclear when they would go on trial.
